Lake Bni-Blad Nature Reserve

A 600 ha Nature Reserve in northern Algeria. It consists of a small lake of 10 hectares, surrounded by reeds, cattail and other lake vegetation. Numerous small streams feed the lake, and a ridge of dunes separates the lake from the Mediterranean. Part of the Mediterranean Sea coast is included in the site boundaries. The site supports a diversity of birds: ducks, geese, and swans, medium sized birds such as coots, rails, crakes; kingfishers and warblers.

Threats to the site are caused by overuse of water during dry periods and from the extension of agriculture.

Ramsar site no. 1303.

The Convention on Wetlands came into force for Algeria on 4 March 1984. Algeria presently has 42 sites designated as Wetlands of International Importance, with a surface area of 2,959,615 hectares.
