The site lies in the floodplain of Oued el Kebir in northeastern Algeria. It consists of a small freshwater lake with submerged vegetation, surrounded by a rich landscape of rushes and grasses. The site covers 70ha. The large variety of wintering waterfowl, raptors and other birds make this an ideal site for an educational and research centre, to increase public interest in the conservation of wetlands.

Approximately 8,000 people live nearby: overuse of water and human population-growth are potential threats to the site.
