Architecture
El-Khoury, Pierre

(1930- 2005)

Born in
Beirut, el-Khoury graduated in 1957 from the Ecole Nationale des Beaux Arts in Paris. He has completed more than 165 projects. His first building was his own house in Yarze, Lebanon, in 1959, a modern structure in harmony with its wooded site.

He founded his firm in 1958, and worked on diverse projects: villas on Lebanon’s hillsides, residential and office buildings, commercial centers, libraries and universities. In 1966, el-Khoury designed the British Bank in Beirut. Among his major works is the Cathedral of Harissa overlooking the bay of Jounieh.

He was a truly modern architect, as can be seen in the glass and steel design for the ESCWA building in downtown Beirut.

He was Minister of Public Works, Transport and Agriculture, Lebanon, from 1982-1984.
