Desert Castles in Jordan - Qasr Azraq

Qasr Azraq is a square basalt castle in the middle of Azraq oasis, 96km east of Amman.

It was built by the Romans around 300 AD, later used by the Byzantines and the Umayyads, and restored by the Mamlukes in 1237. Qasr Azraq was the headquarters of TE Lawrence when he took part in the Arab Revolt against the Ottoman Empire in 1917. Lawrence described it in his book, Seven Pillars of Wisdom as a “luminous, silky Eden.”

The small city of Azraq is a well know game and bird preserve.
