Qasr al-Harraneh is a three-storey rectangular palace located 55km east of Amman. According to an inscription in a second storey wall it was built by the Umayyad caliph al-Walid in 711AD. The walls are several meters thick which suggests that the castle had defensive purposes.

Qasr al-Harraneh is built around a courtyard, with vaulted rooms on both sides of the gate which were used as stables and storerooms. There are three other rooms on the first floor and five on the second floor which were used as living quarters. The third floor is an open roof with an unobstructed observation of the desert all around.
There is only one entrance gate, located in the southern wall, and three-quarter round towers buttress at each of the four corners of the castle.
