Hassan Hourani

(1974-2003)

Hourani was born in Hebron,
Palestine, in 1974. He studied at the College of Fine Arts in Baghdad, Iraq from 1993-97. From 1997-99 he was art instructor at the Women’s Society College in Ramallah, and then worked as an exhibition coordinator and researcher at the Wasiti Art Center in Jerusalem.

In 2001, he moved to New York where he studied at the Art Student’s League. He created installations that explored issues of memory, place and time. He drew, painted and worked with materials from his environment – soil, wood, roped, sand and plants. His work has been exhibited in several Arab countries, South Korea, and the United States.

In August 2003, Hourani drowned near the port of Yaffa, He had been working on a children’s book, “Hassan Everywhere”, which was published in 2004.

The A M Qattan Foundation has established the Hassan Hourani Young Artist of the Year Award in his memory.
