Tayseer Barakat

(1959- )

Barakat was born in Jabalia refugee camp in Gaza in 1959. He studied fine arts at Alexandria University in
Egypt. He is a member of the artist group “New Vision” that pioneered the use of materials such as straw, henna, and leather in works of art. He is also a member of the Jerusalem al-Wasiti Art Center. He has held solo exhibitions in Jerusalem, Ramallah, Gaza City, the USA and Morocco. He participated in the French Palestinian Spring Exhibit at the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris, and was the first Palestinian participant at the 1996 International Biennial of Sao Paolo, Brazil.

Barakat taught art at the Women’s Community College in Ramallah, where he lives.
