The mihbaj is a large wooden coffee-grinder consisting of a decorative mortar, about a foot tall, and a two-foot high pestle. It is a household item used and played as a percussion instrument by Bedouins.

It is also a symbol of affluence, social status, and the much-cherished Arab virtue, hospitality.
