A reed flute, open-ended and end-blown, the minjayrah has a limited melodic range and a breathy sound, which the player sometimes accompanies by humming. It is played at weddings and dances.
In Palestine, a slightly different version of the minjayrah is called a shabbabah.
In Egypt, the version of the flute is called a salamiyyah, and is associated with Sufism.
Unlike the urban nay, this flute is often played by shepherds.
