On December 21 the United Nations Security Council decided to dedicate its session to the problems facing youth.  The US mission to the UN invited students to answer the question: What is the most vital challenge to international peace and security facing your generation? 

From over 1000 submissions from 90 countries, the US mission to the UN narrowed their selection to a small number of finalists., including  Hani Daou.  Ambassador Rice will make reference to Hani in her introductory remarks and read part of his statement. 

The following entries were submitted by Secondary School students at International College, Beirut, Lebanon.

Hani Daou [Grade 11 – IB]

I’ve always asked myself, how does a war last so long? If a dispute was to originate in one generation between two nations, how is it that the same dispute ignites a war nearly 50 years later? Is the common feeling of prejudice, intolerance and hatred something innately present in all following generations, or is it something inherited by our forefathers as if an essential ‘law’?

The most vital challenge to international peace and security facing my generation is the inheritance of a hateful outlook towards another culture or population from our previous generation. All children are born with a blank slate that is shaped by the child’s experiences.

Today, for example, Palestinians and Israelis passionately continue to exchange disputes and address problems concerning which population truly deserves to own the land from which they both originate. I doubt any of the protesters or soldiers exchanging stones and bullets today lived when the issue originated, yet their passion of prejudice and intolerance towards the other side burns as if it was a recent matter.

Addressing a group of Lebanese teenagers, the known reporter Claude Salhani stated his belief that the Arab-Israeli disputes will only end when the adult generations’ hatred towards their enemies will be surpassed by their love for their children. Old and young alike, it is time for us to broaden our prospects and realize that teaching tolerance and love towards the ‘enemy’ is the only way to truly ensure a better life for our children.

I’ve got a question: How many racists does it take to light a light bulb?  You'd think I was about to tell you a joke, but the answer is: “None, racists hate being enlightened”.

Racism is an extreme issue that we are facing in our damaged world. It is a thought and a belief that is taught and passed on from person to person, then generation to generation. So it has existed throughout human history. It upholds the idea that one race is superior over the other, but only God is superior, and his superior hands drew us all equally.

Laundry is the only thing that should be sorted by color. To define it in a practical way, racism is the major hatred of one person toward another for a minor cause. It's the belief that another person is less than human due to skin color, language, customs, or any factor that shows the basic nature of that person. It has caused wars, slavery, and separation of nations. When the word slave is said: aren’t the first words that occur us: Black men? Black families? Poor black children? Racists may not know that their comments, actions, or judgments cause intense effects and leave the deep scars. The person who is discriminated against remains silent, withdraws, and avoids engagement with learning and communication. He also begins to lack confidence.

Once there were two racists arguing about their destiny being written, and that no matter what, they will always be safe from death. To prove each other wrong, they jumped of the cliff, who won? Society.

 

 Samer Charbaji [Grade 11 -6th]

There are many problems that young people face, yet there is one which is the most dangerous. Many of the problems that come to mind are either the causes or the results of other problems. Going to the heart of each, child poverty is the most pressing.

If you feed a person, you own that person. This remains so until that person will rise up and find another source to satisfy his needs. In case of young people, you will have an army of neophytes grasping at whatever they can get, a likely target for horrendous people who will prey on their minds effortlessly and relentlessly for their own benefit.

This changes potential into misguidance. If you’re a person’s only source of information, then you control and can manipulate what goes in and out of his brain from thoughts to orders. That adolescent will need to do whatever it takes to survive even compromising every shred of humanity and conscience he has. You control him. You control what he will do and what he will amount to be. You are his mirror. You reflect in to him what you want him to reflect to you. This will amount to a new generation of citizens having little to no moral background who will just take what they want when they want it. This will result in chaos redefining everything we hope for in civilization and prosperity.

J’ai la chance de pouvoir brandir mon stylo ce soir, de pouvoir écrire ma voix et dessiner ma peine face à un monde ignoré, un monde qui ignore, un monde qui s’ignore, et un monde ignorant. 

Le monde ignoré ne parle que le langage des armes et ne joue que la mélodie des chars. C’est celui de l’injustice où les larmes des mères palestiniennes côtoient les dos de femmes iraniennes lapidées par les pierres de la honte. 

Le Nord qui ignore, sous ses grands airs, ferme les yeux sur les rafales de suicides, de chômage, d’addiction qui l’obscurcissent et s’amuse à redorer son image conquête après conquête.


Le monde qui s’ignore lui, est partout. Il troue la couche d’ozone, surchauffe la Terre, fait pleuvoir de l’acide, gaspille le non renouvelable et noircit les poumons. Il fait gronder la Terre, pleurer Haïti et le Chili et noyer Sumatra et Venise. 


Le monde ignorant demeure criblé sous une pile de préjugés qui l’aveugle, qui le condamne à vendre sa liberté de penser, de s’orner de bombes à l’abdomen et de bafouer tout sur son passage dans sa lutte effrénée pour un monde muet. 
    
Terriens, unissez-vous : la Terre pleure ses enfants.  

Cœurs chrétiens, cœurs musulmans, cœurs juifs, cœurs bouddhistes, cœurs hindous et coeurs de ceux  qui croient en l'Homme, liez-vous les uns aux autres et par le biais de l'ouverture , bravez l’ignorance parce que nos rêves luisent toujours dans nos yeux fatigués. 


Parce que nous revendiquons le droit de vivre.

L’Ignorance

Nous savons de quoi nous parlons et nous savons vous convaincre de notre thèse. Certains cependant n’appréhendent pas leur parole, n’ont aucune idée à défendre, puisqu’ils ne possèdent rien en tant que connaissance.  L’ignorance a toujours été un défaut, un vice auprès de la paix internationale. En effet, la sécurité mondiale ne sera bâtie si elle continue à être anéantie par ce « manque de connaissances ».

L’ignorance est le fait de ne pas savoir ou comprendre. Or, quand on ignore des actes, des valeurs morales ou des idées, on ne connait pas la différence entre le bien et le mal, et on tend parfois à emprunter le chemin ténébreux. Quand on néglige une loi et ses conséquences, il est facile de l’enfreindre et de donner naissance à des crimes, des meurtres ou autres dangers qui menacent la sécurité des peuples. Quand on est inconscient de la discrimination et de ses principes inadmissibles, des effets de la drogue, aucune mentalité ne formera une barrière pour éviter ces problèmes de s’implanter dans le cœur de la paix mondiale pour la casser. L’ignorance est un processus continu : Des parents ignorants ne peuvent rien transmettre à leurs enfants, qui formeront une nouvelle génération inculte. Notre génération fait face à un problème offensif, et votre rôle en tant que Conseil de Sécurité, en quête du perfectionnisme de la paix mondiale, est d’introduire un nouvel aspect de connaissance chez des jeunes.

L’Homme est parvenu  à instaurer au monde une politique de chaos à l’origine de massacres sanglants et de violations des conventions morales et humaines. Plongée au sein du XXIème siècle, une question cruciale se pose sur le front de l’humanité: Quel serait le défi qui assurerait une véritable paix mondiale?

Certains énumèrerons toute sorte de déploiement de violence et discrimination mettant en péril la notion des droits de l’homme: Le racisme, la xénophobie, le sexisme, le fanatisme etc. Cependant, je suis foncièrement convaincue que le cœur du problème réside dans un seul et unique concept constituant le véritable fléau menaçant l’avenir des générations a suivre : l’Ignorance.

 La difficulté à défaire les chaines des convictions représente l’ultime défi qu’il nous faut remporter. Pour y parvenir, il faudra avoir recours à un moyen incontestable: L’éducation, qui offre à l’homme la faculté de recevoir des informations du monde extérieur, entrainant son épanouissement et stimulant son esprit critique. 

Tout homme non nourri par les préceptes soulignant l’importance du respect, de la tolérance et de l’acceptation de l’autre sera condamné à résider entre les portes étroites de l’ignorance.

L’Homme ne tolérant pas son semblable à cause de la couleur de sa peau est un raciste mais avant tout, un ignorant.

L’Homme adoptant une attitude discriminatoire entre les genres est un sexiste mais avant tout, un ignorant.

L’Homme poussé à la persécution de l’altérité au nom d’une croyance donnée est un fanatique, mais avant tout, un ignorant.

L’ignorance, mère de tous les maux, menace les générations à venir en détruisant tout espoir d’une éventuelle paix mondiale.
