Qarn Nazwa

Qarn Nazwa in the UAE is a large rocky outcrop of shale in the middle of expansive gravel plain. The outcrop has hundreds of caves and cracks of all sized in which foxes, rodents, snakes and bats live. These creatures are rare in the Emirates. This 300mx2km outcrop forms a ridge that parallels the Hajar Mountains.

The resident birds are the Arabian Babbler and Rufous tailed Wheateater, the migratory birds are Upcher’s Warbler, Southern Grey and Steppe Grey Shrike, Indian Silverbill.

The site supports acacia and small shrubs. It is now fenced off from the adjacent highway in an attempt to protect it from overgrazing by camels and goats. Qarn Nazwa is a popular spot for weekend picknickers.
