Environment
Ain Elshakika

A sebkha (salt flat) near the town of Darnah, on Libya’s Mediterranean coast, Ain Elshakika covers 33 hectares. The site has two connections to the sea, and at high tide seawater reaches the sebkha, making this a permanent wetland. The site, which is part of Kouf National Park, is an important wetland for migratory and resident waterbirds and has great potential for ecotourism and birdwatching.

Ramsar site no. 026.

The Ramsar Convention on Wetlands came into force for the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya on 5 August 2000. Libya presently has 2 sites designated as Wetlands of International Importance, Ain Elshakika and
Ain Elzarga, with a total area of 83 hectares.
